We record these episodes in batches and we’re getting ready for a new one. We also plan on doing a follow up episode on “Cash is King. We’re simply going to be answering a listener's questions today.
We received a two part question from Ryan. He asked us “Is there a point when having too many products can hurt your store?” and followed up with “Does it make sense to remove low margin items in favor of high margin products?”
We answer both of these questions based on our experiences. If you are having a problem with these kind of issues, this episode could be useful to you.
The points of our first answer:

Why having too many products can be a problem.
The only reason to keep so many.
How it makes inventory easier.
How your sales stats can help pare down a large product list.

The points of our second answer:

What are the customers buying?
How 3PL makes things easier.
How the business stats can help influence your decision.
When to raise prices,
When to mark-up a product.
How to avoid being a mere peddler.
The advantages of cultivating a brand and what that can mean for your products.

Mike:   And welcome to this week’s edition of the EcomCrew podcast.  Grant, how have you been doing, man?
Grant:  I’ve been doing good.  It’s been not so sunny in Seattle and back to rainy, so all’s well in the world.  And how about yourself?
Mike:   Yeah, I only know what it’s like outside based on looking out my window these days.  It’s been pretty busy.  But no, all joking aside, it’s been nice.  It’s been a while since like you and I have talked because like we record some of these in batches and I was at a trade show here for a few weeks and then we had some – well, not a few weeks, but for a week and then we had the travel trip out to China and then we had a shipment show up that had some fun problems, which we’ll probably talk about either on this podcast or another time and yeah, it’s been a while since we chatted.
Grant:  Yeah.  I know.  Funny enough, we were both in Asia at the same time and probably closer over there –
Mike:   Yeah.
Grant:  Than we are over here, from Seattle to San Diego since I was over in Saigon and – well, I guess since you were in North China, I guess we are pretty far but, you know, we both got –
Mike:   Of course, it’s the same time zone.
Grant:  Yeah, exactly.  And probably both close to 100 degrees and 100% humidity so that was always fun.
Mike:   Yeah.  That was our last episode.  I did a solo-cast.  I’m not even sure that you even realize that because we’ve been just going crazy but yeah, I was talking about the temperatures over there.  there was 100 degrees on the thermometer every day.  That was like the lowest it ever was, and there was on day where the head index was 124 and I was just like, “Please let me go home.”
Grant:  Oh my gosh.  I managed to stay at a local’s motel when I went to go visit my factory and...]]>

Mike:   Hi, this is Mike.
Grant:  And this is Grant.
Mike:   And welcome to this week’s edition of the EcomCrew podcast.  It’s been a while since Grant and I have really talked just in general about what we’ve been working on in our businesses lately.  We’ve had a lot of awesome interviews and talked about some other subjects like SEO and things like that, so we thought that this week would be a cool time to just kind of take a step back and talk about just generally what’s going on in our businesses.  We didn’t really do a lot of prep for this episode; we’re just going to kind of sit back and have a fireside chat, if you will, about kind of the things we’re working on, maybe rattle through three to five things each that we’re working on, and maybe, Grant, if you want to kick it off and we’ll go from there.
Grant:  Yeah.  Well, boy, it’s been a pretty crazy year and we’ve both been growing a whole lot, and with Cutting Board especially because it’s still a pretty young business – I mean really all of our businesses are young but – I think one of the biggest issues is trying to figure out a good direction to grow really.  And because there are so many different options available, you can get more into sourcing or get into the marketing.  I tend to do things in a bit of a burst.  So right now I’m working on sourcing and I’ve got my marketing mostly in control.  My search engine rankings are doing well.  I’m ranking number one for “cutting board,” I’ve got a whole bunch of long-tail terms that are doing well, and even short-tail.
So sales are coming in and I feel like the one thing that’s stopping more sales is just not having the right inventory.  So that trip to China was really great and I’m going to be bringing in I think about three containers of new product.  I’m getting stuff from Tunisia now in terms of some more neat products.  I’m getting more stuff from Europe, so really trying to build up the selection and trying to be able to increase my conversions just by having a w...]]>

Mike is still away and on today’s episode I’m going to talk about how SEO creates a better relationship between you and your customer and the different strategies you can use to ... We talk first about creative ways to transform your online transactions. The best way you can stand out from the crowd is to tell a story about your product. This means creating a narrative, developing descriptions, and using keywords to generate trust between yourself and the consumer. But this is more than keyword spamming. You can’t use SEO like and be successful. The heart of SEO is in how natural and intuitive you make it for your customers.
The topics we cover today:

Enhancing your own SEO strategy
How is Google influencing SEO?
Using SEO to tell the story about your product
Page Speed and customer experience
What happens if your site isn’t mobile friendly?
I breakdown why keyword spamming doesn’t work

In this final installment, I share why your first impression with SEO is the most important. The more natural you make it and the more normal it seems, the longer it will last and the more successful it will be.

Grant:  Hello, and welcome to the EcomCrew podcast episode number 30.  This is Grant, your host, and Mike is away on travel, so I’m finishing up part three of our series on SEO for ecommerce.  And where we left off last week was I was talking about the difficulties in getting started with SEO for operators in terms of starting out, where Google has gone in terms of trying to keep ahead of the cat and mouse games in terms of keeping SEO operatives under wraps, and tactics and strategies that you can use to enhance your own SEO for your commerce website.
So leaving right where I left off last week, I was talking about some examples of campaigns that I’ve done in the past for various clients that I’ve worked with.  And one of the biggest campaigns that I did was a large giveaway where we did a six-figure giveaway to get a lot of bloggers to end up linking to our client website.  And the way that we did that was we offered a big value proposition, which was that, one, the giveaway was a very massive push and it was such a large one that it was very hard to ignore and anybody that was interested in it would have to actually link to the campaign and say they were part of the tournament or they were part of the contest and that they were not participating.  And we made it under the guise more or less of saying, “Well, in order to verify that you’re actually the person that runs the blog, you’ve got to post this on your blog and you’ve honestly got to do a little bit of marketing for us because you’re able to participate in this campaign.”
As a result of that campaign, we ended up getting hundreds of links coming back to us and it really ended up working phenomenally because not only did we get the SEO value, we got a huge amount of people coming to the contest that wanted to participate as well because all of these bloggers essentially had all of this traffic would link to my client and be able to go and check out the website and decide if they wanted to participate in like the smaller events as well.  So it ended up being a great contest and one that ended up being run for many, many years after that as an annual event, and just went down as a highly successful event because it was such an entrenched industry that if we had gone and in...]]>

Grant:  Hello, everybody, and welcome to EcomCrew podcast episode number 29.  And this is Grant again with a solo-cast on search engine optimization.  And I actually want to make a quick correction for last week.  I had mentioned that Mike was going to the IRCE conference in Miami and obviously that was wrong.  That IRCE conference was actually in Chicago and Mike was going to Miami for a different reason.  So always fun making a blunder like that on a podcast, but that’s just the way it is sometimes.
And anyhow, I wanted to follow up with part two on the series on search engine optimization.  So last week, we left off talking about a little bit of the history or search engine optimization and I talked about where things started with Yahoo back in the mid- to late 90s and then the evolution of transitioning to Google, which really took over search because of their ability to start weeding out bad search results and what people started doing to really game Yahoo and how people started to game Google.  This week I’m going to talk a little bit more on where Google has gone and where they are now and really bring that into focus to some actionable advice on how you as an operator can really take advantage of SEO and how to apply it for yourself.
So where I left off last week was talking about the type of trust that Google puts into evaluating what types of websites it wants to rank and I talked about the idea of trust rank.  And that idea has been around for quite some time if you follow any of the SEO types of circles.  And what Google has really done is they’ve always been trying to keep up with the search engine optimization guys because at the end of the day it’s really a cat and mouse game where one side makes one move one direction and then Google has to try to catch up and figure out what they’re doing to optimize and stop them from over-optimizing.  And the idea that I put forward last time was that search engine optimization is really just punching outside of your weight class.  And there is an arbitrage that most people believe that is anywhere from easy to difficult to pull off in terms of SEO, and the reality is that the arbitrage is getting much smaller from where it was before.  And it used to be there if you’re a very small guy, maybe you could outrank a very big guy in terms of SEO and that was because you could take advantage of the big guy not really knowing.
Nowadays, that is getting to be a lot farther from the truth and a lot of the reason is that an arbitrage is really an opportunity to take advantage of a situation or at least exploit a weakness in your opponent because you have some kind of information that they don’t or you have some type of ability to front-run them on some oth...]]>

https://www.ecomcrew.com/episode-28-seo-and-ecommerce-part-1/feed/ 4 Hi, this is Grant, on today’s episode I’m going to talk about a topic we’ve been asked to do for a while now. SEO, for those who don’t know SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. I have a long history with SEO and I think this will be a 2 or 3 part... Now back in the day Yahoo was king of the search engines, but slowly as the concept of search engines became more refined Google came in and changed the whole thing. SEO is the cornerstone of getting your business, service, or just name out there. It is a multi-layered thing that is much more complicated than a lot of people would let you believe. Hopefully today you will get a good foundation for SEO and we’ll work up to where it is going in the future eventually.
The topics we cover today are:

The history of Search Engine Optimization
What is “page rank”
Why you can’t pay for your ranking
A true link vs. a spam link
The 2 waves of linking farming
The beginning of “Trustrank”

This is part 1 of a 2 to 3 part series. So as we go deeper into this subject we’ll see where SEO started, move to where it is at the moment, and finally talk about where it will end up in the future.

Grant:  Hello, everybody.  This is Grant from EcomCrew and I’m going to be doing a solo podcast as Mike is currently traveling at the moment, and I believe he’s going to the IRCE conference over in Miami and he’s going to be meeting up with a bunch of people over at the eCommFuel forums over there and doing his networking and I’ll be over here taking care of business and also doing this podcast.
So one of the topics that we’ve been requested to talk about is going to be about SEO.  And for those that don’t know, that’s going to be search engine optimization and it’s really going to be the fundamental building block of ecommerce and really just about everything that happens online is really based on SEO.  So it’s a very important topic and one that is very near and dear to me.  So to start off about SEO, it’s going to be a pretty big topic and one of the reasons that is, I think one of the best ways to put it is that it’s a vast field of work that encompasses everything from technical to networking to content development to even website programming.  And it’s not just a magic little tool that you can just kind of SEO your website.  And unfortunately, a lot of people have a very rudimentary understanding of SEO, so one of the things I’m going to try to do in this podcast is to really get you up to speed on what SEO is really all about, and then after that we’re going to talk about actual strategies.
I apologize if some of you are a little bit more up to speed on SEO and the various strategies and what it means, but just so that everyone can get onto the same page over here, we’re going to step back a little bit and go and do a bit of a 101 crash course on SEO, and before we even do that though, I’m going to just talk a little bit about my background in SEO and why I feel that I have any kind of authority to talk to you.  And I do think that’s a very important part of searches these days because everybody and their mom unfortunately gets some email and even phone calls, and I’m sure a lot of you ecommerce operators that have posted numbers get these type of calls all the time from some so-called SEO consultant ...]]>
