In recent developments BigCommerce has made some polarizing changes to their services. The changes have alienated theme developers and price change... We discuss this shift and compare Shopify and BigCommerce. We have both had experience with both sites so our conversation is more of a pro and con list.
The questions we answer today are:

Which site has the most capacity for products that require lots of options (ex: color choice).
Which site is most common (thus easier to work with for others)?
Which site makes managing orders easier.
Which site allows the best customer follow-up process.
Which site offers the best coupon or sale options to a customer.

Other topics we cover are:

What happened to BigCommerce’s business.
Why Shopify is so much bigger than BigCommerce.
Why check out conversation is a big plus for these sites.
BigCommerce’s theme changes and why it’s causing problems.
The pros of BigCommerce.
The pros of Shopify.

We tried to keep away from bashing these sites because both sites have their uses. It all depends on what an entrepreneur needs to do on their platform. So consider this episode as a weighing of the options. Go with whatever will best fit your product.

Mike:   This is Mike.
Grant:  And this is Grant.
Mike:   And welcome to this week’s edition of the EcomCrew podcast.  How’s it’s going, Grant?
Grant:  It’s going pretty good.  I had a nice weekend of rafting in the water over in Washington on the east side.  That was nice and 90 degrees and the water was pretty much like bath water, so a lot of fun.
Mike:   Fun like when you took me rafting?
Grant:  Oh, that was just a little bit cold.  I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Mike:   When there was like ice crystals floating in the top of the water, that’s usually a pretty good indication that it’s cold.
Grant:  It builds character, didn’t it?
Mike:   It definitely did.  It definitely did.  I had a great weekend of doing as little as possible, which was a welcome change after the last couple months of travelling and just working six-day weeks.  And it was nice.  We went to the driving range and hit some golf balls and took a swim in the pool and stuff.  It was a relaxing weekend.
Grant:  I know.  It’s very interesting realization when you’re an entrepreneur: if you just don’t do anything for the weekend, it kind of feels like a vacation.
Mike:   Yeah.
Grant:  Like a true, true vacation for other people.  So, you know you’re busy when justone day or two days is like, “Wow.”
Mike:   Yeah.
Grant:  “That’s amazing.”
Mike:   Definitely.  So yeah, besides that, I was actually just talking to you about this before the podcast, I had my first number one new release product on Amazon, which is kind of neat.  And you had asked me what that means and I don’t know, it’s just kind of cool.  It’s like a medal I guess in elementary school, a participation award maybe or something, but it’s kind of cool to see on the screen.

We have our own growing pains stories on this topic, so we hope we can help those of you ready to move. The key factor to maintaining a warehouse is efficiency. The key factor to maintaining a warehouse is efficiency. A lot of things go into making sure your operation is efficient. You need to make sure the items are safely packed for shipping (which is harder than you expect) and that your inventory can keep up with demand. We’re going to share with you some of our fixes for these problems. As well as what has worked for us, and what hasn’t.
Topics we discuss in this episode:

Grant’s trial and error experience with packing his cutting boards.
The importance of keeping shipping damage low
Mike’s decision to move into FBA through Amazon
Working with Amazon
Finding a good fulfillment software

At the end of the day it comes down to what you need to make your business work. Some of our suggestions are pretty pricey for a start-up, but for middle tier outfits it might be a solution. Efficiency is the keyword today and hopeful we have given you some great resources.

Mike:   Hi, this is Mike.
Grant:  And this is Grant.
Mike:   And welcome to this week’s episode of the EcomCrew podcast.  First off, want to apologize for missing an episode here.  Grant and I have been doing a lot of traveling and our ColorIt brand’s been exploding in a good way and it’s just been absolutely crazy so we did miss an episode so we apologize about that but we’re back on track here and hopefully over the next several months, we won’t miss an episode.  We have a really fun topic this week: the evolution of going from your garage to a warehouse and beyond.  Grant and I have been doing ecommerce now for about three years and we’ve gone from doing just pure drop shipping to running our initial ecommerce stuff out of a warehouse and then a small shared office space that we had and then going from it to another warehouse then to another warehouse.  And then Grant also has a warehouse up in Seattle.  So we thought this would be a fun topic to talk about this week because I’m sure some of you listening to this podcast are in the middle of “I need to move” and things to be thinking about.  So with that, I’m going to turn it over to Grant, let him kick it off this week and we’ll go from there.
Grant:  Okay.  Thanks, Mike.  Yeah so this topic’s near and dear to us because, as an entrepreneur, I believe everyone at some point has started off working at home or literally in their garage in most cases.  And in ecommerce, it’s such a tempting, tempting business model because your garage is essentially almost free room and board for all of the products that you store, and for a lot of companies you don’t need an army of inventory taking up 2,000 square feet.  If you’ve got 500, maybe even 400 even 200 square feet in  your garage, hey, that’s a little opening to get started.  So there’s definitely a massive jump in the level of, I would say, competency it takes in order to learn how to properly do inventory management when you’re just shoving stuff into a few racks in the garage to actua...]]>

Bigcommerce has announced they will be raising their prices. Today we will discuss what this price increase means for our personal businesses and the platform in general. It’s really easy to create a mob mentality against Bigcommerce during all this, but hopefully today we give you a broader picture of this change. We have differing views on Bigcommerce's decision, but that might help you decide what is best for your own business.
Since Bigcommerce has announced this price increase there has been a lot of talk of migrating to Shopify. Both are strong platforms, but today’s episode is a balanced and intelligent conversation about the two.
Here are some of the points of our conversation:

Bigcommerce’s reasoning for the price increase
Services and features affected by the price increase
Bigcommerce vs. Shopify
The benefits of both platforms

Mentioned in Today’s Episode:
Klaviyo
Stitch Labs
Google  Trends
Shopify Plus

Mike: Hey, everyone. This is Mike.
Grant: And this is Grant.
Mike: And welcome to this week’s edition of the EcomCrew podcast. This week, we’re going to be talking about Shopify and Bigcommerce and some of the price increases that have been going on over there. Grant and I actually both have a Shopify and a Bigcommerce store. I’m running IceWraps.com on Bigcommerce and I have ColorIt.com on Shopify and conversely, Grant has CuttingBoard.com on Bigcommerce and ChoppingBlocks on Shopify. So we both have experience running those stores and the main thing we want to talk about this week, the thing that kind of prompted this episode is that Bigcommerce’s prices are going to be going up. We’re members over at the eCommerceFuel forums and they’ve been talking about it quite a bit over there and we wanted to kind of talk about this because it’s pretty important. As a store owner, your shopping platform is the most important thing I would say, unless you’re selling on Amazon. Then maybe it’s the second most important thing. But obviously shopping cart’s really, really important.
So we’re going to kind of get into Bigcommerce here first and talk about their price increases that are coming up, I guess imminently. I haven’t gotten an email yet because I am on an annual plan, so I expect that email coming down the pipe sometime this summer, but Grant has gotten that email and has been talking to Bigcommerce and Bigcommerce finally has published on their website their price changes. So we’re going to talk about that first and, Grant, I’m going to kind of hand it off to you since you did get that email and have been talking to Bigcommerce, and then I’ll kind of give you some follow up on that.
Grant: Okay. Sounds good, Mike. So Bigcommerce has been telegraphing this move for quite some time and we are on the Partners program, which means that we have a little bit of an insight before the public kind of reaches out.]]>
