I’m working on turning an idea into a reality but starting from scratch and haven’t done anything like this before. Your article is assisting in guiding me. Now I need to find someone to create a CAD design and a manufacturer that can create silicone products. And I’m also in Vancouver and would love to keep this product Canadian made. Trying to determine the steps from 1-10 is a bit confusing but I’m sure it will be a good journey.

Got a patent. Very easy to use and works really well.

Hi Adrian-you can try Brenco on Annacis Island. They’re pretty big though and you might need to try finding a smaller machinist. They’re not too hard to find though.

Great article and timely. I am currently looking to source a metal manufacturing vendor in China for a project I am working on. I am producing a prototype locally in Vancouver but was wondering if you had any local medal shops in BC that you could recommend to do a production run. Either BC specific or in Canada that I could reach out to for quotes. The product is made from aluminum – outdoor furniture.

Hi Carmen,

It’s a broad question so difficult to answer. However, there’s not a one size fit all for sourcing companies. Somme (especially the good ones) specialize in certain industries. Some specialize in smaller companies, some in larger companies. My advice is to try and speak to you at least 2 or 3 and see which you get the best vibes from. Mike may also be doing a podcast or post in the next couple of months on a sourcing company he’s working with.

I’m a new ecomerce , interested on import a modified product from China ( because I don’t know any other possible suppliers here in USA or even Canada) but I’m having some trouble trusting on any suppliers yet, due to the inconsistencies on prices and communication as well. I am currently talking with a possible sourcing agent from http://www.sourcefromchina.com but I’m not completely sure about because of the way he answered to my first email. Do you have any advice on a qualifying , competitive and trustworthy source company on China or perhaps any company closer like in USA or Canada. My product it’s kind of textile for outdoor activities. Thank you very much, I really appreciate it.

My own career started in the 70’s when outsourcing to Mexico (from the U.S.) was just starting to take off. As an employee of a prosperous, “prestige” electronics manufacturer, I remember the astonishment by our staff that top management had recently decided to make our quality goods in Mexico! We employees assumed that they would soon recognize the error of their ways… but that never happened. Well, in two more years, our company (which was selling about $20 million annually of high-end large screen TVs and stereo equipment) failed in the market due to the plummeting quality of our products. So they declared bankruptcy. What I didn’t foresee at that time was that our whole nation would eventually be joining this bandwagon and outsourcing practically everything abroad. Yes, everything is cheaper these days, but you get what you pay for. And the U.S. has lost most of its engineering and manufacturing expertise in making things.
